Many of the elements of curriculum design are sentence based, which makes it very difficult to see the big picture design for a course (level-4 object) or program (level-3 folder). We chose to provide an abbreviation of the learning objective for two reasons:
- To make visualizations of curriculum possible
- To lower the cognitive load of reading all those sentences over and over
By lightening the cognitive load (just make sure your LO abbreviations are distinct from each other), we hope your sorting and designing tasks will be faster.
If you have the appropriate access rights (Editor, Manager, Admin), you can choose to override the abbreviations chosen by Coursetune at any time.
You can choose the abbreviations from three different modals. In this gif, you can open the Expanded LO modal and select your words directly from there.
You can also choose the abbreviations on an individual LO by selecting it and opening the Edit LO modal.
Third, you can choose the abbreviations through the LO Batch Editor.
Method 1: Change the learning objective abbreviation from the Edit LO modal
Step 1: If you're adding the learning objectives one at a time as you write them, then it's easy to edit the abbreviation within the learning objective editor. First, make sure you are on the right course (level-4 object), and that you have Edit mode turned on.
Step 2: Now select the learning objective you want to change. To open the LO editor, click the pencil.
Step 3: You're allowed to choose up to three words for the abbreviation. If you select more than that, you will be prompted to deselect a word before you proceed.
The green words are the current abbreviations, so you can change them to words that make sense for you. To do this, click the manually choose the abbreviated words checkbox , and then select your new words. Just make sure your LO abbreviations are distinct from each other. Don't forget to save!
Method 2: Change LO abbreviations from the Expanded LO Editor
Step 1: If you're creating or importing a bunch of learning objectives at once, we recommend you check and edit the LO abbreviations as part of that process while using the expanded learning objective list. Start by selecting the competency or bundle containing the desired LO. Then, click on the arrowed arc to show the expanded learning objectives list.
Step 2: The expanded LO modal will open. Select the learning objective you want to change, and then click on the new words you would like to use.
No need to save anything, the changes are saved automatically. Simply navigate from learning objective to learning objective by clicking on the words you want. It's fast and easy to manually change the entire list of LO abbreviations at once.
Method 3: Change LO abbreviations from the Batch Editor
Step 1: Start by turning on Edit mode, and click on a bundle or C-layer element. Click the editing pencil to open the LO Batch Editor.
Step 2: Click on the desired LO, and then on the LO icon that appears to the right of the text. You can then select two to three words.
