Coursetune is a platform that reinforces instructional design best practices. To this end, we have incorporated vetted learning scales so that you can effectively communicate to faculty and leadership the depth and methodology behind your learning objectives. Don't see your favorite scale here? Email your request to support@coursetune.com.
Coursetune has eight LO Scales you can choose from on a course-by-course basis:
Simplified Bloom, Bloom Levels, ESIL, Fink Taxonomy, Marzano Complexity and Webb's DoK, Affective Domain, and Psychomotor Domain.
*Pro tip* you can use more than one scale to indicate more than just LO complexity. For example, you may want to align to Blooms Taxonomy and you may also want to identify how you address 21st Century skills in ESIL. You can use both scales and change the view accordingly to inform those discussions.
Bloom Verbs - Benjamin Bloom's famous Taxonomy first appeared in 1956. There are six levels of complexity to this scale and they are identified by the verb in each outcome or objective statement.
- 1 - Know
- 2 - Comprehend
- 3 - Apply
- 4 - Analyze
- 5 - Evaluate
- 6 - Create
Simplified Bloom - This simplified version of Bloom's Taxonomy is an easy 3-point scale.
- 1 - Comprehension
- 2 - Application
- 3 - Transfer
Bloom's taxonomy is for the cognitive domain. There are also scales in CourseTune for the Affective (feeling) domain and a Psychomotor (doing) domain.
Affective Domain - David Krathwohl's Affective Domain focuses on the attitudes that are learned. These involve our feelings, emotions and attitudes. This scale is useful for indicating the progress toward outcomes that are more character traits.
-
1 - Receive
-
2 - Respond
-
3 - Value
-
4 - Organize
-
5 - Internalize
Psychomotor Domain - Ravindra H. Dave's Psychomotor Domain focuses on the use of motor skills and is excellent to use for indicating progress toward outcomes that require physical demonstration, such as vocational education.
- 1 - Imitate
- 2 - Manipulate
- 3 - Perfect
- 4 - Articulate
- 5 - Embody
ESIL Lens - Maria Andersen's ESIL Lens is a way to indicate learning in the digital age. This lens helps faculty communicate to students how much they need to commit to memory, versus knowing it exists, or knowing where to find it.
- E - Existence
- S - Supported
- I - Independent
- L - Lifelong
Fink Taxonomy - L. Dee Fink's Taxonomy focuses on six levels of complexity in terms of the level of learning goals. What do students need to remember at the end of the semester and what should endure after the course is over.
- 1 - Foundational Knowledge
- 2 - Application
- 3 - Integration
- 4 - Human Dimensions
- 5 - Caring
- 6 - Learning to Learn
Marzano Complexity - Robert J. Marzano created this scale to categorize four levels of learning goals often used in PCBE (Personalized Competency-Based Education).
- 1 - Retrieval Goals
- 2 - Comprehension
- 3 - Analysis
- 4 - Knowledge Utilization
Webb's DOK (Depth of Knowledge) - Norman L. Webb originally developed DOK for mathematics and science standards, but it has since been adopted for language arts and other areas of study. This taxonomy is focused on assessment of the objectives.
- 1 - Recall
- 2 - Skills and Concepts
- 3 - Strategic Thinking
- 4 - Extended Thinking
