This article covers the Course (level-4 object) Variation-specific role permissions.
For more information on what roles can do on all Coursetune levels, check out this article: How are the roles defined on a Course (level 4), Program (Level 3), Division (Level 2), or Institution (Level 1) Team?
Roles on the full variation stack
There are four team roles in Coursetune that can be given to the entire stack of variations:
- Viewers (V) - can see the curriculum plan, mappings, and reports
- Commenters (C) - can do what viewers do and participate in discussions around the courses
- Editors (E) - can do what commenters do and edit the curriculum plan outside the nucleus
- Managers (M) - can do what editors do and edit the nucleus, change who is on a team (with what roles), change the status of suggestions, and move courses and programs
Managers and Admins are able to turn variations on and off and are able to edit everything in the stack of variations. To edit the elements in the nucleus, managers and admins need to navigate to the base variation and then the c-layer.
Editors who have inherited rights from above (program or division level), or who are assigned to the base variation will have editing access to all variations (but not the nucleus). They can edit the bundle layer, including the following:
- adding or editing bundles
- moving LOs to different bundles
- adding individual activities.
If you are an editor on a course (level-4 object) before the Variations feature is turned on, you will inherit rights to all variations when the variation feature is enabled.
Roles on an individual variation
There are three team roles in Coursetune that can be given to an individual variation:
- Viewer-v - can see the curriculum plan, mappings, and reports for the specific variation
- Commenter-v - can do what viewer-v can do and participate in discussions around the specific variation
- Editor-v - can do what commenter-v can do and edit the curriculum plan outside the nucleus on the specific variation
Let's look at the specific differences between roles.
Differences between Manager, Editor, and Editor-V
Manager | Editor (full stack of variations) | Editor-v (assigned to non-base variation)
Can turn on variations | Yes | No | No |
Can add a variation | Yes | No | No |
Can delete a variation | Yes | No | No |
Can edit the course nucleus | Yes (on the base variation, c-layer) | No | No |
Can edit the bundle type and bundles | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, only for the variation(s) where they have access |
Can add, edit, or delete an LO | Yes (on the base variation, c-layer) | No | No |
Can move LOs into different bundles | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, only for the variation(s) where they have access |
Can move LOs into different C-Layers | Yes (on the base variation, c-layer) | No | No |
Can add an activity set to a variation | Yes | No | No |
Can add a single activity to a variation | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, for all variations in the stack including the base variation | Yes, only for the variation(s) where they have access |

Can share a course variation |
Yes, only on the base variation | Yes, only on the base variation | No (only the base variation can be shared) |
Sharing a course can be done by users with proper role permissions. Read Who can share a course (level-4 object)? for more information.
Mapping to proxy courses functions the same whether there are variations on the source course or not. If a course (level-4 object) has the Variations feature turned on, and is proxied, the proxy circle graph will display the variations UI (solid white circle). That tells you that the source course contains course variations. You will not see the course variations in the proxy course(s). You can, however, map proxies to program and course outcome sets within the program they live. Read When can I map to outcome sets on shared level 4 objects (Shared Courses)? for more information.
Difference between Commenter and Commenter-v Roles
Commenter (full stack of variations) | Commenter-v (assigned to non-base variation)
Can comment on all variations | Yes | No |
Can comment on base variation | Yes | No |
Can comment on non-base variation | Yes | Yes, only on the variation(s) where they have access) |
*Commenters cannot edit
Difference between Viewer and Viewer-v Roles
Viewer (full stack of variations) | Viewer-v (assigned to non-base variation)
Can view all variations | Yes | No |
Can view base variation | Yes | No |
Can view non-base variation | Yes | Yes, only on the variation(s) where they have access) |
*Viewers cannot edit

Since the Base Variation is where Managers can edit the Course Nucleus elements, you may want to check this article out: Glossary: Base Variation
Never heard the term Activity Set before? This term refers to the ability to add sets of activities (such as all Discussions, all Readings, etc.) from other course variations or the base variation to your own course variation. For more information, check out these articles:
