On social media, hashtags # are a way to find the content you are interested in or to filter certain views. Similarly, in Coursetune, tags allow you to give the course a custom label that can be used for easy finding and filtering. Tagging can be used to identify which courses are #core versus #electives, for marking #AP courses or #honors, or you can use them for documenting progress like #inprogress or #done. Because you define the tags, you can get creative with them! Make sure to talk with your team about your tags, so that consistency is maintained. The tags are used to filter your level 3 view so that you see just what has the tag you select, like only #online courses or only #year1. The tags are also available as a filter option on level 3 reports. You can select a tag, like #spring #accredidation, and run a report with only that tag.

Adding Tags

Step 1: Editor or Managers can add tags to courses. To do this, start at the course level (level 4), and make sure edit mode is turned on. Select the center of the course, and then click on the editing pencil.

Step 2: Add your tag(s) to the field, beginning with #. Now, you can search for all courses that have like tags.

Some good examples for tags could be #core, #hybrid, and #online.

Shared Courses (level-4 objects) with Tags

A set of shared courses (level 4 objects) will have one source course and one or more proxy courses. Typically, the source courses are all placed together inside an independent collection and then shared as proxies into the specific collections where they are used. You should only use labels on the source course that will also apply to the proxies. Proxy courses can have additional unique tags, but the source course tags will also be seen.

Suppose all the MBA courses are in a Level 3 collection called “All MBA Courses” and then shared into Level 3 folders based on which quarters the courses are offered in. Financial Management is a source course in “All MBA Courses” and has proxies in Q1 Courses and Q3 Courses (as seen below).

The tag #core is added to the source course to indicate that Financial Management is part of the MBA core curriculum. When this tag is added to the source, it also shows up for the proxies (as seen below).

Note that this #core tag cannot be removed from the proxies because it is on the source (this is why you see the source icon next to the tags). 

Now we can add individual tags to the proxies that are not seen by the source. For example, we can indicate that Financial Management in Q1 will be offered in a weekend format by adding a #weekend tag to it. We can indicate that Financial Management in Q3 will be offered in an online format by adding an #online tag to it (as seen below).

When the tags are in blue (or have no icons next to them) they are editable from that object. When the tags are in black (or have an icon to the right) they are not editable from that object.

Make sure that you only tag source courses with those tags that will make sense to all the proxy courses that use the source course.

Variations with Tags

Each variation can have its own tags. Suppose we start with Financial Management as a base course and it has the #core tag on it. When we make the first two variations called “8-week” and “10-week,” these variations have no tags on them (see below).

You can add tags to the variations using the course edit panel; the same way you would a normal course.

If you want every variation to have #core on it, add it to each variation individually.

Variations with Sharing and Tags

If you do have a source course that is the base for a variation, only the tags on the base variation pass to the proxies.

Suppose you have the variation configuration shown below with a #core tag on the base variation and additional tags on the other variations.

If the base variation is also a source course, only #core appears in the proxies.

Using Tags with Level 3 Reports

Program (Level 3) reports can be filterable by specific tags. For example, if you only want to see a program report that includes online courses in a program (and you’ve tagged those courses), then filter by your #online tag inside that program.
