Why do we love Sharing Level-4 Objects?
Sharing level-4 objects are one of our very favorite features. It will simplify the number of objects you manage across level-3 folders and make editing, updating and gathering feedback a breeze.
How it works
Let's start with a typical use case for sharing a objects. The math department teaches the course "Calculus 1" and two other departments (physics and mechanical engineering) both require it as part of their degree program. Here are the courses currently in these three level-3 folders (programs):
In Coursetune, a course can have a source/proxy relationship that allows this to happen. Continuing with our example, Physics and Mechanical Engineering want to include Calculus 1 as a shared level-4 object in their level-3 folders and provide suggestions and discussions on different aspects of the level-4 object. The mathematics department needs to own the level-4 object as a source level-4 object, retaining their editing and management rights.
In this case, the math department will have the source level-4 object (Calc 1) and the other two departments will see it as a proxy level-4 object.
The source level-4 object is owned by a single level-3 folder and only managers and editors in that level-3 folder are allowed to change the structure and text in the level-4 object. However, anyone who has a shared level-4 object inside their level-3 folder will be able to view and/or comment on the level-4 object automatically. If the physics department has changes to suggest, then anyone with commenting rights in the physics level-3 folder will be able to suggest changes to the shared mathematics level-4 object. Anyone with viewing rights in the physics level-3 folder will similarly be able to view the shared mathematics level-4 object.
This kind of structure allows the source level-3 folder to maintain control over the curriculum, while allowing stakeholders to participate in revision. Only the editors/managers of the source level-4 object will be able to make changes on the source level-4 object, but those who see the shared level-4 object will become commenters on it.
