The Variations feature ensures a consistent curriculum architecture while allowing for the natural variation caused by modality, instructor, learning resources, assessments, or time frames. The same course might be delivered in very different modalities with different circumstances that impact the learning and assessment strategies. When several variations of a base course have been made, switch between them to compare the different course variations.

For example, the course “College Algebra, Math 141” might have eight variations to switch between:

F2F 15-week (base variation)
F2F 8-week
F2F Project-based
Hybrid 8-week
Online 15-week
Hyflex Fall 2020 13-week
Dr. Bear’s Section
Dr. Mouse’s Section

If you have an inherited role, or are assigned to a base variation, you can switch between all course variations. Please note that if you have a role on a specific course variation (editor-v, commenter-v, or viewer-v), you will not be able to switch between all course variations.

Method 1: There are two ways to switch between variations. The first is through the drop-down menu in the top bar. Make sure you're on the course (level-4 object) and click on the drop-down menu to choose a variation.

Method 2: The second way to switch between variations is in the right panel. Make sure you're on your course and click on the Variations icon in the right panel. Then, you can select the desired variation from the list.

Note: The Base Variation serves as the base from which all variations can be created. The bundle side and course activities can be added/edited on each variation. The elements that CANNOT be edited on a variation make up what we call the course nucleus. The nucleus includes:

Course name, description, ID, and number of credits
C-layer type, names, descriptions and IDs
Learning objectives and arrangement in the C-layer
Mappings of the learning objectives to any outcome sets
